Gynaecologist and Obstetrician at Melomed Mitchells Plain

General gynaecological services

Some women believe that gynaecological check-ups are not necessary; however, they are very important as they help women receive preventive health screening and education that is specific to their biological needs. Dr Masina is highly experienced and passionate about treating the health needs of all women, from adolescents to older patients.

Many of the conditions that affect women's health, such as breast cancer, including cervical cancer and HPV, may exist without any signs or symptoms. For this reason, it's essential that women go for regular screening to detect these conditions at earlier stages when they can be treated most effectively. Additionally, Dr Masina understands the reproductive health of females, making her the ideal person to give advice on contraceptive options and ways to prevent contracting sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

Dr Masina offers a wide range of women’s healthcare services, including:

  • Annual check-ups: Annual check-ups include a general health check, breast examination, a Pap smear and testing for STIs if requested.
  • Pap smear: A pap smear painless test used to detect the presence of precancerous or cancerous cells on your cervix.
  • Breast examinations: Dr Masina examines your breasts for any lumps or abnormalities.
  • Sexual Healthcare: Dr Masina will test for HIV and other Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) and provide treatment if necessary. She also offers HPV vaccinations,
  • Hormonal problems: Dr Masina treats various hormonal conditions, including PCOS-related hormonal imbalance, hormonal problems following menopause and irregular testosterone levels
  • Abnormal bleeding problems: Treatment of uterine bleeding and irregular menstrual bleeding
  • Pelvic examination: the outside and the inside of your genital area is checked using a tool called a speculum.
  • Uterine fibroid management: Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous growths that develop in the uterus, usually during childbearing years. Treatment may include watchful waiting, medication or non-invasive surgery to remove them.
  • Contraception advice: As a qualified ob-gyn, Dr Masina will sit down with you and carefully discuss the pros and cons of each method to help you decide what option will best suit your needs. She provides a wide variety of contraceptive methods, including birth control pills, IUCD (Mirena, copper T) insertion & removal, sterilizations, injections and nuva rings.

Adolescent Gynaecology

Adolescent gynaecology deals with the reproductive health problems that teenagers face. This includes sexual health and the diagnosis and assessment of gynaecological conditions. Adolescence is a time of great physical and emotional change; therefore, sexual health and gynaecological issues are quite common. Going through puberty can be a very challenging time for pre-teens and teens.

Although teenagers may feel nervous about their first visit to the gynaecologist, Dr Masina will provide them with a safe space where they can be open and honest. If you're coming in for a visit, you're welcome to bring along a friend or family member for support or simply come alone if you prefer.

Dr Masina has a passion for treating adolescents; she is able to skillfully diagnose, manage and treat a range of health concerns that affect women under the age of 18. We recommend that girls first visit a gynaecologist at 13-15 years old. At this age, Dr Masina will perform a regular health examination and talk to them about their body's development.

While all adolescent girls should see a gynaecologist, it is especially important to have an examination if you've been sexually active (or are planning to be) or have problems with your period.

After your initial visit, your visits with Dr Masina will be focused on preventing STDs and unplanned pregnancies through contraceptive counselling. You will also get the opportunity to discuss any abnormal menstruation concerns such as painful menstrual cramping that isn't relieved by medication, extremely heavy bleeding, periods that last longer than seven days, nausea or vomiting and premenstrual syndrome (PMS).

Dr Masina can help adolescents with the following:

  • Puberty problems
  • Heavy bleeding/ menstrual abnormalities
  • Early/late onset of periods
  • Sexual development disorders
  • Abnormal development of the vagina or uterus
  • Contraception advice and prescription
  • HPV vaccination
